Maths

Maths is a skill we use daily and forms an essential part of everyday life. At Oakfield Primary Academy, as part of our broad and balanced curriculum, we use a Mastery approach to mathematics.  Children are encouraged to develop a love of mathematics as a driver for better understanding the world around us. Using a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract model, following the White Rose scheme of work, our intent is for our students to leave Oakfield as confident, competent mathematicians with a love of mathematics, fostering skills that will not only allow them to successfully progress in the next phases of their educational journey but also make them lifelong mathematical learners.
The White Rose scheme of mathematical learning enables progressive teaching, moving through a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract model, developing both fluency and a wider understanding of the application of mathematical skills. Students at Oakfield get to experience a broad diet of maths based on mastering fluency and practising its application in problem solving and mathematical reasoning scenarios. In becoming fluent, students can make conscious choices relating to the key facts and skills needed to solve mathematical problems efficiently with opportunities woven into the daily structure of a lesson.  They can also develop their ability to follow their own lines of enquiry to justify or prove mathematical concepts using appropriate mathematical vocabulary.  The broad and balanced maths curriculum at Oakfield Primary Academy enables maths to be a key component of understanding, enabling students to build firm foundations for a maths-rich life.
